An iris in a monozoom microscope system is an optional but sometimes useful attachment.  It can be used to extend te depth of focus and to give additional light control to the camera.  By partially closing a iris, as in photography, the depth of focus can be extended, which, with adequate illumination can be extremely useful for some applications such as examination of deep bores.  However, by closing the iris the resolution of the image deteriorates.
